What is MRI-guided Focused Ultrasound (MRgFUS)?

What are the benefits of MRgFUS for the treatment of fibroids?

There are a number of benefits of the MRgFUS procedure. It is completely non-surgical, and is performed without entering the body. The procedure is performed as an outpatient. The risks of performing the MRgFUS procedure are significantly less than the surgical options. The recovery period is also the shortest of any of the surgical or procedure-based options.

Some patients will be treated for infertility due to their fibroids. These patients will be spared more invasive surgery. Other patients will be treated for symptoms due to their fibroids, most commonly heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, or increased urinary frequency. These patients may prefer the noninvasive nature of MRgFUS over other options such as Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) or surgical options such as myomectomy or hysterectomy.
